Default Time Magazine on Yoga Injuries and Quickie Trainings

Here's the article to read...

When Yoga Hurts - TIME

and here's their close...

Part of the problem is that increasingly, the people teaching yoga don't know enough about it. Yoga was traditionally taught one-on-one by a yogi over a period of years, but today instructors can lead a class after just a weekend course.

That's right. You too can be a yoga instructor in just 2 days.

Sigh.

Peace.

Default same article

I see in the same article it states that yoga is not effective for weight loss. What do you think about that?

Smile YogaFit

Hi Sara & Harlan,

I read the article and I did not see any mention of YogaFit. I think part of the issue is that there was aim taken at YogaFit. I am level 1 trained in YogaFit and I teach classes 4x per week. I have been practicing Yoga for a little over a year. I have lost 20+ lbs and I feel great. I don't agree with the article in Time because Yoga does build strength and when your mind & body are calm your body heals quicker from whatever is ailing you. The level 1training was very intense. As I mentioned before it is 16 hours of the most intense training I've ever experienced. The spiritual aspect of Yoga is different from the physical aspect. When Beth Shaw discovered that Yoga is for every body she implemented a practice that even the least flexible person could do. It's not about having a "quickie training" it's about helping others. The women and men who take my class sing praises of being able to do things that they couldn't do before. I am confident in my ability to help others see what Yoga can do for them. I get success stories all the time and that tells me that I am doing something to help people. That is what it is about for me. I love to help others. It seems as though YogaFit was targeted and I don't think that was fair. Some of the people at the training weren't even there to get certified. They just wanted to learn to practice at home for themselves. I plan on taking all of the trainings and I am looking forward to deepening my practice. YogaFit has taught me to connect with my innerself in a way that I never have before. I love what Beth Shaw has done with this program and her vision is awesome. I recommend taking a training so that you can see how in-depth it is.

The article does not mention YogaFit. No one claimed it did. You may have accidentally made that connection.

It does complain about people teaching yoga after just a weekend training.

I've been doing yoga now intensely for nearly a year. I have learned the positioning of knees, wrists, shoulders, and legs could have a major effect on injuries.

But a 2 day training, especially when there are no re-requisites, is asking for trouble.

Peace.

Harlan

I have practiced in several different studios of many styles and safety isn't always present. I was in a class with a RYT 500 Monday evening, she has a pretty impressive list of credentials and I found her class to be dangerous.
I have taken YogaFit trainings: I have found the Master Trainers to be very good teachers and very Yoga minded. I like YogaFit's stress on safety first. No program is perfect. I think people interested in teaching Yoga should have a personal practice for years before teaching, but guess what??? If you pay your money, most teacher training programs will take you. And you will probably pass...... It has to be coming from the heart, a teacher has to want to be there and has to want to help people.
Oh... I found Yoga after loosing 30 lbs, but it has helped me keep it off and want to eat right!
Hope I haven't stepped on any toe's here. This is my first time on this forum. I just think we all need to keep an open mind about things that are new to us, or that are not "traditional" Yoga.
YogaFit trainee's aren't RYT's after the first week end train. That is just the beginning of their journey.
Namaste`

Flounder is low in Saturated Fat. It is also a good source of Vitamin D, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Phosphorus and Potassium, and a very good source of Protein, Vitamin B12 and Selenium, however this food is high in Cholesterol.

Also, re the discussion on YogaFit, if you go to the yoga.com website and search the discussion groups for YogaFit, it will return 33 pages. The issue is old.
