I hope you'll share your thoughts on what makes a good yoga
teacher as opposed to one who isn't quite there. Remember, we are not here to judge but to learn and grow together. Namaste. Harlan

I think what makes a yoga teacher good is highly subjective. Each student needs to find the teacher and type of yoga that works best for her or him. Some people love the way I teach yoga. Others find that my style of teaching does not work for them.
That being said, what I look for in a yoga teacher is Confidence Concise, clear use of language well balanced classes |

A good Yoga teacher has: A solid knowlege base but also an awareness of her own limitations;
A deep love of yoga; Respect for, and empathy with those under your tutelage; And let's not forget: sheer, authentic, irrepressible joy ...An ineffective Yoga teacher as not. |

Dear members
No outer disciplines can make a person a Good Yoga Teacher. Yoga is a journey inward into deeper states of ones consciousness. One must dive deep within , discover a center that transcends ego. The Center which is always guided by Peace, Harmony , Love and Beauty should be allowed to manifest in Body, life and Mind. once that manifestation take place, one begins to transform by higher consciousness which further manifest into our behavior and attitude and personality then you are only good and not bad . you only think, act and speak good of others at all time in life. That is being a Good Yoga teacher Acharya Girish Jha LinkedIn: Acharya Girish Jha - Ecademy Profile |

Thanks for the responses so far.
It would be helpful if you would be more concrete in your responses. What makes a person a good mathematics teacher? It's not the math. If you were choosing a teacher of math for your child, what would you look for? And before you tell me yoga is different... It is... and it isn't. Peace. Harlan

Gary, what does a "well balanced class" mean to you?

Thank you studentandteacher for a thoughtful post.
Interesting how things change from the students' perspective isn't it? I encourage you to keep posting because ultimately, everyone benefits. When you are a good yoga teacher, it's inner teachings spread throughout the world.

I believe a good Yoga Teacher, holds the practice space sacred for all those present so that everyone from the most experienced and confident to the newest or most vulnerable student feels held in the loving arms of Spirit. To me this means no idle chit chat, no cliques, no ego massaging (mine or theirs), it can be tempting to take the credit for one's students' progress. But trust me if you're a good Yoga Teacher, this'll feel like a hollow violation of the responsibility you assume as Teacher real quick. Spend a moment with each person present - anything from eye contact, or a smile, to a physical adjustment, or verbal feedback. Everyone wants to know how they're doing if indeed 'they are GOOD ENOUGH'...I make it my business to assure everyone (some how) that indeed they are and that God thinks so too. A good Yoga Teacher continues their professional development, and maintains a regular personal practice...
